Winey Tasting Notes: Meiomi Red Blend

I fully admit that I am a sucker for red blends. I mean, I have had such wonderful experiences with them! How can you go wrong if you take a bunch of wonderful reds and mix ’em together? Ok, it’s a LOT more complicated than that, but in my humble opinion, a red blend brings out the best in each wine used to make it.

I discovered Meiomi’s Red Blend (NV, 13.7% ABV, California) at a recent graduation party. (Side note here: I am fully convinced that we all need a dose of graduation party food at least once a summer. The pulled pork, chicken, bratwurst, brisket with a nice helping of sides such as pasta salad, fruit salad, grilled veggies and oh yes….the cake!!! But I digress…)

The nose on this blend is big and bold with aromas of baked cherry and dark herbs (think thyme). You’ll taste cherry jam, cocoa and red berries with a teeny kick of tannin at the end. It has a velvety feel in your mouth – round and full and rich and smooth. I seriously wrote the words “Wow!” and “Yum!” in my notes. I’m going to have to add this as one of my favorites. It’s the kind of wine you can serve big red wine lovers with confidence. (Just save a bottle for yourself. Ok maybe a few for yourself.) It’s also a wine that you could serve to someone who claims to not really be a big red drinker and start them on the road to liking red wines. It is in the $20 range and widely available.

Cheers!
